"When asked what I was going to write about, I looked heavenwards and there, in the vaguest of ways, was my inspiration. The constellation of Orion was shining brightly in a clear night sky. Orion was the mighty hunter of Greek mythology, with his two hunting dogs, Canis Major and Canis Minor. He fell in love with one of the Seven Sisters (the Pleiades star group) but she would have nothing to do with him. One version of the myth says that Orion's life ended tragically when he stepped on a scorpion. The gods felt sorry for him so they put him in the sky with his dogs. Scorpio was banished to the other side of the night sky so Orion could not be hurt again.
The music doesn't really try to follow this closely, but it's a nice story that gave me a starting point for the three movements."
